- Lot Description
- A glorious example that exhibits slightly mottled steel-olive and rose-russet iridescence on intensely lustrous, frosty to semi-reflective surfaces. Sharply struck and expertly preserved, this is an uncommonly smooth and attractive Morgan dollar from this stored Old West mint. An extremely popular issue with the third lowest mintage among circulation strike Morgan dollars, the 1885-CC was produced to the extent of just 228,000 pieces. A sizable percentage of the original mintage (148,285 coins, or 64.9%) was distributed through the various GSA sales of 1972 to 1980, however, which has made Mint State examples readily obtainable in today's market. Even so, this issue is rare above the MS-66 grade level. At NGC MS-67, this specimen is among the finer certified survivors. It represents a significant find for collectors assembling an advanced set of Carson City Mint coinage or Morgan silver dollars.
