Lot Description

A superior example that ranks among the finest 1854-C quarter eagles obtainable in the present market. It shows a typical quality of strike for this challenging issue with considerable softness in and around the centers. Surface preservation is outstanding, however, for while lightly circulated, both sides are free of individually distracting marks and show richly original color in olive-orange with enhancing pinkish-rose iridescence. A single pair of dies was used for this issue, and most examples have a fine reverse die crack from the rim to the fraction bar, as here. From a mintage of just 7,295 pieces, this is one of the finest evaluated by both CAC and is worthy of a strong premium.
