Produced during the brief era of practical, functioning bimetallism in the United States that spanned much of the 1840s, the 1847-O is far scarcer in Mint State than a sizable mintage of 2,584,000 pieces might suggest. Most examples were fed immediately into commercial channels and soon acquired wear. Later, many half dollars of this issue were melted when silver prices rose sharply in response to the economic effects of the California Gold Rush. For astute collectors, our offering of this brilliant BU example represents a bidding opportunity worthy of serious consideration.
