1884 Pattern Annular, or Ring-Form Five-Cent Piece. Judd-1724, Pollock-1934. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-64+ (PCGS). Obv: here is one of Eastman Johnson's "holey" patterns, the central is perforated with an eight sided scalloped design, around which are 13 stars above is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in bold rather crammed together letters which are not balanced side to side as AMERICA runs a bit too close to the date 1884 at the bottom. Rev: states FIVE CENTS with two shields on either side. Handsome nickel-gray patina with the fields showing full reflectivity and free of all but a trace of carbon. Scarce with perhaps 25-30 examples known of this pattern issue, and always popular for its unusual design and central perforation.
