- Lot Description
- A coin with a bold arm's length appearance, its surfaces generally rich mahogany brown with some intermingled olive-brown that speaks further to the originality. Sharply struck and well centered, with a near complete frame of denticulation on both sides. A few small flan flaws are noted in the left obverse field inside the letter G in FUGIO, along the border outside the letters GIO and the following cinquefoil, following the final digit 7 in the date, and at 12 o'clock on the reverse. Minor surface build up engages the outside of the ring at 1 o'clock on the reverse; there are no significant handling marks. Some, though not all, examples of Newman 19-Z are struck in medal turn orientation, but this is not one of them. This variety is the most abundant of the three die combinations of the Z, or "production pattern reverse" with raised rim label and as such most often represents this Guide Book type in collections. This is an imposing example that would fit a well chosen type or variety set of Fugio cents.
