This intriguing variety earned mention in recent editions of the <em>Guide Book</em>:<p><em>The mintmark position was moved to the obverse starting in 1968. At this time appropriate mintmarks were hand-punched into the dies at the Philadelphia Mint. During this operation the exact position of the mintmark occasionally varied to some degree. One extreme exception is on some coins of the 1975-D, where the D is located near the date. This variation has a premium value.</em>It has been given the attribution FS-401 by NGC, and has proved popular with both numismatic professionals and specialist collectors. Q. David Bowers mentioned it in the December 8, 2015 Coin World where he stated at one point: "...for the first person from whom I buy such a coin in the next 60 days I will put up $1,000." This is the first example your cataloger has handled in a career of nearly three decades - the variety is clearly rare. Untoned and softly lustrous, this pleasing example will surely see spirited bidding from advanced numismatists.<p><p>
