Lot Description
C-2, noted by the closeness of ST in STATES on the reverse. A lovely, boldly lustrous GEM. Brilliant original mint red accents the violet tinged brown surfaces. Radiating mint blooms all over that swirls with strong cartwheels. Sharply struck with fully rendered devices. Exceptional surfaces devoid of any serious marks or carbon flecks of any kind. Likely from a hoard discovered by Elmer Sears around 1935, which Walter Breen noted to have contained "fiery mint red Uncirculated" coins. PCGS 35, NGC 23, CAC 20. The last two examples sold for $2,532 and $2,880 in July and May 2019 respectively. The current Collectors Universe value is $3,900 and the current CAC CPG value is $3,120. We sold an example in July 2017 for a then record of $6,169. What a great type coin or a Gem for any great half cent set. Cert. Number 38397141 PCGS # 1169.00
