- The mintage of 100,000 pieces often reported for this issue is clearly incorrect as 1822 dimes have never been available numismatically in any quantity; it would be more likely that half or fewer that number were actually coined of this issue. Writing in the excellent 2015 reference Bust Dime Variety Attribution Guide, Winston Zack et al. estimate that only 200 to 250 examples are extant in all grades. A quick perusal of our online auction archives confirms that after a small number of dazzling Mint State condition rarities, the extant population of this issue quickly drops down to lower grades such as VF, Fine and VG. Those coins that were placed into circulation (which were most of them) stayed there until worn out, lost or, more likely, melted. A high grade circulated survivor such as this NGC AU-53 is a significant find for specialists in any market. It is untoned with appreciable frosty luster and plenty of bold detail remaining to silver-gray surfaces.
