"1796" (1845-1860) Castorland Medal, or Jeton. Paris Mint Restrike. W-9160. Gold. Plain Edge. MS-62 (PCGS). Edge with pointing hand and OR at 6 o'clock. Struck from the original obverse die, noticeably bulged in the left field, and a new reverse. The edge marking was incorrectly given as "cornucopia and OR" in our (Bowers and Merena's) October 1987 Norweb I catalog, which in turn yielded an incorrect striking period of 1880 or later. Reflective fields support fully rendered design elements on both sides of this vivid and flashy medium gold example. Provenance: Ex Numismatic Gallery, May 10, 1953; Ambassador and Mrs. R.
