Lot Description
1917 Standing Liberty Quarter. Type II. MS-64 FH (NGC). Brilliant surfaces support full mint luster and a razor sharp strike. Modifications to the design resulted in an inordinate amount of pressure being placed on the obverse dies for the Type II Standing Liberty quarter. The result is that Full Head examples of this type as a whole are much more difficult to find than for its Type I predecessor. Indeed, the 1917 Type II is an important strike rarity with J.H. Cline (Standing Liberty Quarters, 2007 edition) asserting that "10% or less" of the mintage was struck with Full Head definition. By way of comparison the author states that upward of 80% of 1917 Type I quarters exhibit Full Head detail. Provenance: From the A.J. Vanderbilt Collection. Acquired from Bach's Coin Box, August 2007. PCGS# 5715. NGC ID: 2434. Click here for certification details from NGC.
