- Tompkins Die Stage 3 (late)/1, Rea et al. Die State b (late). This pretty piece is brilliant in the centers, but vividly toned at the peripheries in halos of intense cobalt blue and reddish-gold. Strike detail is razor sharp to full throughout, and the surfaces are highly lustrous for the grade with a lively frosty finish. A trace of friction and a few faint hairlines are hardly worth mentioning.
The 1835 Browning-5 combines an obverse that is unique to this variety with a reverse shared by the 1835 B-4 and 1835 B-6 pairings. Although not specifically mentioned therein, the lovely Tompkins Reference Collection specimen offered here is tied for CC#6 based on the listing in the 2010 Rea et al. census. Its obverse die stage is intermediate between Tompkins 3 and 4, the crack below Liberty's bust readily evident, but extending only to the hair curl above the drapery and not yet joining the horizontally bisecting crack below the letter B in LIBERTY.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Another eBay purchase from inadequate pictures, but when it showed up in my mailbox I was pleasantly surprised. The pretty toning is most likely from time spent in an old Wayte Raymond holder. A lovely example.
