Lot Description

1840-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1. Die State II. EF-40 (PCGS). A visually pleasing early date Charlotte Mint five with rich honey-wheat color and most major design elements well defined. Faint silvery overtones and a somewhat glossy texture are noted for accuracy. The first Charlotte Mint half eagle with the mintmark located on the reverse, the 1840-C is a scarce issue with an uncommonly low rate of survival even for a Southern gold issue from the early 1840s.
