Lot Description

Rich deep honey-olive color with enhancing blooms of reddish-gold. Faint traces of luster persist and join ample boldness of detail to confirm this as an uncommonly appealing coin at the certified EF level. The final San Francisco Mint issue in the long-lived Liberty Head eagle series, the 1907-S is also the scarcest issue of this type from the 20th century. Although the mintage of 210,500 is fairly generous for the era, few coins have been located in European bank hoards of classic U.S. Mint gold coins. Most examples probably remained in government storage until destroyed through melting in 1937. Irrespective of grade an attractive 1907-S $10 represents a significant find in today's market, as it did in Mr. Stack's time.
