Lot Description
1795 Liberty Cap Half Cent. C-6a. Rarity-2. Manley Die State 2.0. Plain Edge, No Pole. Overstruck on a Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent. VF-35 (... Glossy deep golden-brown surfaces exhibit olive highlights throughout. The naked eye picks up no marks of consequence, and low magnification reveals just a shallow old scrape at OF and a small patch of roughness at HA on the reverse. Overstruck on a cut-down Talbot, Allum & Lee cent, though not noted on the PCGS holder and only just now noticed by the writer (FVV). An R (from STORE?) is seen plain as day at the obverse rim at 3 o'clock, though no other traces of the undertype are present on either side. Choice for the grade and worthy of more study by its next steward. A significant part of the mintage of 1795-dated Talbot, Allum & Lee cents was purchased by the Mint for use as copper -- some having half cent planchets punched from them, others being melted. This interesting situation is also noted in this catalog under the Talbot, Allum & Lee offering.
