Lot Description

1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 5.8-O.2, W-2630. Rarity-5+. Mailed Bust Left. Fine-12 Heavy Porosity. 127.4 grains. This is a dark copper-gray copper with the obverse well centered on the planchet, while the lower reverse border bisects the date. Most major design elements are evident, although the surfaces are overall rough with extensive pitting that is particularly heavy over the lower right reverse and obscures much of the seated figure. The lack of a cap at the top of the reverse pole is the diagnostic feature of this reverse; its pairing with Miller obverse 5.8 is a scarce variety with only 10 examples known to Michael Hodder at the time of our (Stack's) January 2000 sale of the Perkins Collection.
