Manley Die State 4.0. Deep chestnut-brown toning blankets both sides and speaks to the originality of this premium EF half cent. A trace of ancient surface build up is nestled among many of the design elements on the reverse, but since none of the scattered circulation marks are of significant size the in-hand appearance is uncommonly smooth and well composed for the grade. Boldly defined where allowed by die state.<p>Since this variety was probably included with the March 31, 1804 delivery, Bill Eckberg (2019) believes that the injury to the obverse die that caused the Spiked Chin feature happened sometime in mid-March. Cohen-5 is the second scarcest Spiked Chin attribution with about 200 examples known in all grades. These rarely come any finer than VF, this premium PCGS EF-40 with CAC approval one of the nicest for the variety that we can recall handing. It is of further significance to specialists due to the die state, which Manley describes as "Rare." The two reverse cracks are now joined and appear as a single bisecting crack, but the breaks are not bold yet, and another crack though the upper right wreath has yet to develop.
