Lot Description
1897 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Proof-62 Cameo (PCGS). This fully struck medium gold specimen exhibits bold field to device contrast that readily upholds the coveted Cameo designation from PCGS. The 1897 inaugurates a run of relatively plentiful Proof quarter eagles that continues through the end of the Liberty Head series in 1907. We stress the word "relatively" in the context since, on an absolute basis, all classic U.S. Mint gold coins are rare. The 1897 was produced to the extent of just 136 Proofs, and this handsome survivor would do equally well in an advanced type or date set. PCGS# 87923. NGC ID: 288L. PCGS Population: 5; 7 finer in this category (Proof-66 Cameo finest). Provenance: From the Alexander Collection.
