Lot Description: 85.2 grains. Manley Die State 1.0. Our first offering for this Cohen number in nearly four years, and with good reason, for the 1804 C-4 is a notable rarity within its series. This choice NGC/CAC Fine-15 example exhibits richly original autumn-brown and chestnut color to surfaces that retain bold definition for all major design elements. The obverse shows a few scattered marks that are consistent with the grade, the reverse is smoother but with some ancient surface build up within the protected areas of the wreath and peripheral lettering.<p>Bill Eckberg (2019) writes that examples of this die variety were probably coined in a single day and included in the delivery of February 24, 1804, which also included coins from the 1803 C-3, 1804 C-1 and 1804 C-2 die varieties. The current estimate of 80 or so survivors in all grades explains the slight revision to the 1804 C-4 rarity rating from R5 to R4+. Of these, only 20 exist in grades of Fine or higher; this variety is "nearly unique in AU and EF" (again per Eckberg). The Widmer Family specimen, therefore, is among the finest known for this rare and conditionally challenged Cohen number, confirmed by its impressive CC#8 ranking in the Breen-Hanson Condition Census.
