- Breen Die State IV. The reverse is rotated a few degrees clockwise from medallic alignment; of this feature the 2000 Breen large cent encyclopedia observes, "The reverse is found rotated to various positions in all die states." This is a sharply struck, generally well centered example with the only trivial softness confined to the upper obverse and right reverse borders, where the denticulation is thin to absent. The weakness in the former area makes conclusive attribution of the die state challenging, but a loupe does reveal evidence of crumbling in the denticles outside the letters LIBE in LIBERTY. Dressed in blended deep copper brown and lighter autumn-brown colors, the surfaces are satiny and smooth apart from an area of roughness in the planchet at the lower right obverse border, just above the end of Liberty's bust. Arguably the most common die pairing in the Draped Bust cent series, a sharp and nicely composed Sheldon-276 like this is a strong candidate for inclusion in a type set.
