Losbeschreibung
A lovely example of a seldom offered Proof gold dollar issue. Smartly impressed with a softly frosted finish, the design elements appear to float atop deep pools of reflectivity in the fields. The color is a lovely pinkish-gold, the reverse perhaps a bit lighter than the obverse, but both sides equally attractive. There are no post-production blemishes of note and the surfaces expectably well preserved for the coveted Gem grade assigned by PCGS.
Proof gold dollar rarities continue with the 1878, and issue for which the Mint delivered a mere 20 coins on February 9. Perhaps not surprisingly, only a single die pairing was used, although interestingly two obverse die state are known. The offered coin represents the late state with several tiny die rust lumps (as made) visible on Liberty's neck and within the hair below the ear. The reverse is rotated approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from normal coin alignment.
Estimates for the number of Proof 1878 gold dollars extant are pretty tight in the modern numismatic literature. Q. David Bowers (2011) says 11 to 14, John W. Dannreuther puts forth a similar estimate of 12 to 14, and the current version of the online PCGS Population Report publishes a range of 13 to 15. The present specimen is one of the very finest seen by PCGS and would serve as a focal point in any advanced cabinet.
