- A lovely specimen of this exceedingly rare Proof large cent issue. The surfaces glow with a softly reflective finish as the coin rotates under a light, direct viewing angles also revealing pretty iridescent undertones of antique gold, powder blue and pinkish-apricot. Dominant color is a blend of light olive and steel-brown with faint traces of faded rose-red evident here and there around the peripheries, more so on the reverse. The strike is superior, with only stars 7 through 13 and the denticulation around much of the borders on both sides appearing a trifle soft. The hair and bust are fully realized, the wreath and lettering on the reverse are sharp to full. The surfaces are well composed - a few tiny carbon flecks in the left and right obverse field areas, reverse field below the first letter T in STATES, are hardly worth mentioning, while a more expansive, yet lighter spot on Liberty's neck is the only real impediment to a Choice Proof grade.<p>Today, at least 10 and perhaps as many as 15 Proof cents of this date are known, the uncertainty coming from ancient offerings in sales like Bushnell and Cleneay with coins that have not been positively traced to more recent known appearances. When that rarity is figured against the price that a piece like this is likely to realize, the idea of value comes to the fore - of course, not many people think of Proof large cents as bargains, but compared to many coins that cost the same or more money, they might well be! This piece is highly desirable, a beautiful specimen that would undoubtedly bring a sophisticated copper specialist great pride.
