A delightfully original Superb Gem from the first year of the Barber series, this piece exhibits richly original toning in dominant olive-gray. Both sides are enhanced by multicolored iridescence that includes shades of steel-blue, reddish-gold, sunset-orange and emerald green that provide truly outstanding eye appeal. The luster is full and intense with a billowy satin texture. Exceptionally well preserved and virtually pristine, this piece is clearly among the finest survivors from this inaugural issue.<p>Though boasting a relatively low mintage figure of 934,000 coins, the 1892 half dollar is the most common issue in its series, as many were saved as souvenirs by the public in excitement over the new design from Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. While easily acquired up through Choice Mint State, examples become considerably scarce in Gem condition, and Superb survivors like the present coin are nothing short of rare. For Set Registry enthusiasts and collectors of the most outstanding U.S. type coins, this handsome piece is a true jewel.
