Lot Description

A scarce variety whose Condition Census descends quickly down to the lower reaches VF, the offered coin represents a significant certified grade for the 1798 Sheldon-182 dies. Medium brown surfaces show hints of olive, both sides hard and tight apart from micropitting here and there around the borders. Peripheral softness is noted, especially at upper left reverse, but the overall design is appreciable. A tinge of underlying pale pink color to the obverse points to an old cleaning, left obverse and reverse borders with a few dull marks, although the thin V-shaped planchet void in the obverse field behind the lowest ribbon end is the most useful identifier for provenance purposes.
