69.0 grains. Noe-10 is the re-engraved version of Noe-8, which gives the present example the appearance of a lower grade. The reality, as confirmed by PCGS, is that this is a lightly circulated survivor from these dies. The surfaces are warmly and originally toned in pewter gray with wisps of iridescent russet engaging many of the design elements. The planchet shows gentle wavy characteristics, as made, with a shallow straight clip and equally shallow curved clip at 3 o'clock and 6:30 relative to the obverse, as made. The tops of the letters TS IN M are beyond the flan on that side, which is also the result of an impression that is drawn to 5 o'clock. Apart from softness to the second letter A in MASATHVSETS and some of the inner border beads, the balance of the major design elements on the obverse are bold for the grade, including a generally sharp tree at center; only a trace of outer border beading is present at upper left. The better centered reverse is less affected by the planchet clips, with only the top of the letter M in DOM appreciably off the flan. This side is universally bold to sharp in detail, in fact, and shows more than 50% of the outer beading. No marks or other post-production blemishes assail the eye from surfaces that show equal evidence of gentle circulation and subsequent careful preservation. Noe-8 through Noe-10 represent a "hollow tree" type among Large Planchet Pine Trees that deserves to be collected as a major variety, and this premium EF from the Dean Oakes Family Collection is an excellent candidate for inclusion in the cabinet of another selective numismatist.
