1863 Liberty Half Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). Medium gold with plenty of retained luster and some pale olive highlights. The fields are somewhat reflective, the devices fairly frosty. Only 2,442 examples were struck of this Civil War date, with the usually seen example apt to be well-circulated, say VF or so. At AU or finer--with "or finer" represented by precious few pieces--the date is a rare prize indeed. Whether you collect Liberty half eagles by date--a monumental task by any standards--or simply appreciate the lure of a rare date, the present coin will fill your needs admirably.
