Lot Description

Satiny yellow-gold with lively retained luster. Struck in the first year of U.S. coinage operations at the newly opened San Francisco branch mint. This and the double eagles of the same date were the circulating workhorse of the year; quarter eagles and half eagles were also struck, but both those issues are extreme rarities.
