- Tompkins Die Stage 6/3, Rea et al. Die State c. Tompkins Plate Coin. A handsome piece with olive highlights on otherwise pewter gray surfaces, as well as subtle undertoning in powder blue and champagne-pink. The surfaces are a tad rough when viewed under magnification, and a touch of glossiness points to a light cleaning ages ago, but these features are easily overlooked in-hand, and just as easily forgiven. Well defined for an advanced die state example of this Browning number, overall light wear has left plenty of bold striking detail in most areas. A few wispy pin scratches are present, including on Liberty's cheek and neck and, useful for provenance purposes, in the upper left obverse field from the top of the ribbon ends approaching the border between stars 6 and 7. Representing a more readily collectible die state of the 1805 B-3 quarter than the early die state coin in the preceding lot, that offered here would do equally well in a circulated type or variety set.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Loved this coin the moment I saw it in the dealer's case! A perfect example of the later die stage for this variety showing the weak E in LIBERTY, obverse and reverse die cracks, and the prominent die clash on the reverse.
