Lot Description

A noteworthy offering for the scarce Short Worm variant of John Chalmers' Birds type shilling. The surfaces are pleasingly original in pewter gray patina that lightens to more of a silver gray hue in the centers. NGC has mounted this coin with the reverse up in the holder, and while the birds and worm scene has been lost to wear, the spacing of the peripheral devices confirms the W-1785 attribution. The central obverse is a bit bolder with some detail remaining to the wreath and clasped hands. Wispy handling marks find greatest expression in the centers, although none are worthy of individual attention. This coin clearly saw much circulation, which adds to its charm and historical appeal. It will serve as a nice type example in many collections.
