Lot Description
Hard, frosty surfaces are warmly toned in medium brown, direct lighting revealing faint traces of faded mint orange close in to some of the peripheral design elements. The strike is a bit tight to 4 o'clock on the obverse, 8 o'clock on the reverse, affecting only the denticulation. A few of the obverse stars are soft, but otherwise we note overall sharp detail to the design elements. A very shallow abrasion grazes the field between star 6 and the tip of Liberty's coronet, this being the only blemish of note on otherwise smooth-looking surfaces. The dies are heavily rusted in this state and feature a crack from the bust tip as seen in Noyes Die State B/B. We have handled a few nice Mint State examples of this Newcomb number in recent decades, including this one, which would serve equally well in a type, date or variety set.
