1870. Snow-8, FS-302. PCGS graded AU-53. CAC. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. The top misplaced digit variety with numerous digits sticking out of the denticles. An attractive chocolate brown example. Misplaced digits are found from the 1850's to the early 20th Century coins. They are believed to be an ad-hoc hardness test for the dies. A simple whack of a mallet with a digit punch on an inconspicuous place on the die, like the denticles, either leaves a mark on a softened die, or none on a hardened die. Sure, they though no one would notice or care. But they were wrong (PCGS # 37486) Estimated Value $480 - 500
