Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 1/3, Rea et al. Die State P. In this die state, the reverse die is beginning to shatter with three radial cracks present: from the left border through the letter N in UNITED; from the upper border, through the second letter T in STATES, the scroll at the letter I in PLURIBUS, the eagle's beak, into its right wing; and from the border at 2 o'clock into the field between the letters ER in AMERICA. Pretty surfaces exhibit target-like toning in powder blue, rose-orange and antique gold colors, both sides overlaid in warmer olive-gray patina that is more extensive on the obverse. Smooth in hand with glints of frosty luster and plenty of bold definition remaining to the major design elements.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: A colorful mid grade and middle stage example of this scarce die marriage. Collecting all the die stages as they revealed themselves on the coins struck from these dies is a true challenge.
