Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 4/1, Rea et al. Die State b. This flashy Choice AU example exhibits abundant mint frost on surfaces that are brilliant apart from blushes of iridescent reddish-gold around the peripheries. Sufficiently bold in strike at the obverse stars, and sharp elsewhere, minimal circulation has resulted in only light high point rub and wispy handling marks, none of the latter worthy of singular concern.
The Browning-2 is the more available of the two die pairings of the Large 9 Guide Book variety of the 1819-dated quarter issue. The obverse is different from that of the 1819 B-1 Large 9, with star 1 pointing to the lower fold of drapery at the end of Liberty's bust. On the reverse, the scroll begins under the left edge of the letter D in UNITED; interestingly, this reverse die was used much later in the 1827 B-2 pairing. Just shy of Condition Census per the 2008 Tompkins listing, this conditionally rare NGC AU-58 is included in the 2010 Rea et al. census, in which it is tied for CC#6.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: I was originally outbid by Roger Solomon when this coin was offered in 2004, but received a second chance to acquire it after his unfortunate passing. I was never able to find a nicer example as an upgrade.
