- Description du lot
- Deep orange-gold color overall, we also note silvery highlights for both sides and, on the reverse, blended pinkish-rose patina. The brilliant luster is complete, yet strongest and easiest to appreciate when the coin is viewed with the aid of direct lighting. The fields exhibit deep mirrors and support fully impressed, razor sharp design elements. A small, shallow planchet void close in to the bottom of Liberty's hair bun is as made and serves as a useful identifier for provenance purposes; there are no troublesome post-production blemishes.<p>Production of Proof quarter eagles tapered off with the production of only 144 coins in 1905, the lowest number of any Proof delivered during the final decade of the Liberty Head design typ. The brilliant finish as seen here proved to be popular among the numismatists of the day and was continued up until the end of the series, so popular in fact that many collectors eschewed the Sandblast Proof finish of the subsequent Indian quarter eagles.
