- Tompkins Die Stage 5/2, Rea et al. Die State b. The obverse is struck slightly off center to 12 o'clock, but thin denticulation is still seen along the upper border. This offset is typical of the die pairing; the reverse is ideally centered. Sharply defined for the grade with only light wear engaging a few of the high points. Faint hairlines are noted for accuracy, but much frosty to semi-reflective luster remains, and there is attractive retoning in pale pinkish-russet on otherwise silver gray surfaces.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Over the years Denis Loring and I traded coins multiple times due to the interest that we both have in die stages. When his coins came up at auction I was able to add some great examples, including the coin offered here. It is a wholesome example worthy of a higher grade.
