- 1890-CC Liberty Half Eagle. MS-63 (NGC). Brilliant and frosty. Sharply struck almost everywhere save for a touch of softness on the eagle's neck feathers as is typical for the issue. Despite a generous mintage (by Carson City standards) of 53,800 pieces, comparatively few Uncirculated examples can be accounted for today. Doug Winter in his Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint (2001) estimated a Mint State population of fewer than 150 specimens. NGC has certified examples as MS-63 or finer on just a few dozen occasions since the establishment of that firm in 1986.
