- Tompkins Die Stage 6/2, Rea et al. Die State c. Tompkins Plate Coin. Representing the latest state of this Browning number, and the second remarriage of the dies after the 1821 B-4 Rea et al. Die State c, this coin shows a sharp obverse crack through star 12 and clashmarks from the arrowheads on the reverse at star 8. The reverse die has been lapped and now shows only a few small rust pits in between the olive leaves and the digit 2 in the denomination. Pleasing medium pewter gray patina with a tinge of pale gold, both sides are boldly defined overall with a smooth appearance during in-hand viewing.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Following along behind the pairing of this obverse with its use in striking the 1821 B-3 and B-4 varieties is enlightening as to the workings of the early Mint. Dies were taken out of the press and put back in for many reasons, including work stoppage, press repair and die lapping. Fortunately for today's variety collectors the Mint did not care if they put the same die pairs back in place or mixed and matched dies to create new marriages and remarriages.
