- 1838-O Liberty Seated Dime. No Stars. Fortin-102. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS). A lovely example of this brief type, from the first year of coinage operations at the New Orleans Mint. Deep sea-green and amber toning adorns the smooth, satiny surfaces. A pair of minuscule contact marks are noted, on the reverse. Years ago Walter Breen wrote that 20 pieces were presented at a special ceremony in New Orleans in 1838 involving the opening of a theater, however back up facts are scarce. It would be interesting today to learn if such an event occurred and the circumstances surrounding it. This certainly would make a nice article.
