Smartly impressed with sharp detail throughout the design, this is an impressive example of a key date Liberty Head nickel issue. Lightly toned in iridescent golden-apricot, both sides also exhibit pretty undertones of powder blue and antique gold as the coin dips into a light. Intensely lustrous with a lively satin to softly frosted texture to the finish.<p>The 1885 is a low mintage issue with just 1,472,700 circulation strikes produced. Since contemporary numismatists largely ignored these coins in favor of their Proof counterparts, virtually the entire mintage slipped quietly into circulation, where most were worn out and eventually lost. Today the 1885 is scarce in circulated grades and rare even at the lower reaches of Mint State preservation. This impressive MS-65 is a noteworthy condition scarcity that is sure to see spirited bidding at auction.
