Lot Description: Heck DS1, Breen Die State I. Well centered in strike with virtually all design elements boldly to sharply rendered, a touch of softness at upper right reverse involves the word OF, which is still fully legible. Warm, even chocolate-brown patina overall, the surfaces are hard and frosty with some nice gloss. Scattered small and moderate-size marks are noted, many original to the planchet before striking, although dull nicks below Liberty's chin and outside the letter L in LIBERTY are noted and serve as particularly useful provenance markers. The dies for this variety are attributed to Frederick Riche, who worked under Engraver Robert Scot for 18 days at the rate of $1/day, and was paid in June 1794. The Sheldon-55 cents are believed to have been delivered between June 26 and July 8. That offered here grades EAC VF35 and, while not included therein, is tied for CC#7 per the Bland census.
