Lot Description
1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 8-B, W-6740. Rarity-2. UNITED STATES, 4 Cinquefoils. MS-64 BN (PCGS). This hard and satiny example delivers superior quality and strong eye appeal for both type and die pairing. Generally medium brown surfaces retain appreciable faded mint color that serves as outlines for many of the peripheral devices. The strike is tight to the upper right obverse, lower right reverse, but while border denticulation is incomplete as a result, the overall design is sharp. The only significant flan flaws are on the reverse above the letter W in WE and at 1 o'clock, but they are still minor and detract little from generally smooth-looking surfaces. Definitely superior to the vast majority of Mint State examples from the Bank of New York Hoard, which contained 246 examples of Newman 8-B when inventoried in 1948. PCGS# 889. NGC ID: 2B8F.
