Lot Description
1895-O Morgan Silver Dollar. AU-58 PL (NGC). CAC. OH. An incredibly desirable example with pearl-grey patina and scattered hints of bronze and gold color. Well struck for the issue with faint reflectivity in the fields on both sides. Just 4 coins have been graded finer by NGC in this category, indicating the incredible scarcity of this issue with Prooflike qualities. An old NGC holder and green CAC sticker further emphasize this superior nature. With a mere 450,000 coins struck the 1895-O boasts one of the lowest mintages among circulation strike Morgan dollars. Most examples were retained in federal vaults and melted later, although more than 100,000 pieces probably entered commercial channels and account for the typically encountered worn survivor in today's market. Choice AU and Mint State coins have always been elusive in numismatic circles, and when offered at all are apt to display poor striking quality and/or unattractive surfaces. The present offering clearly represents a fleeting bidding opportunity not to be overlooked. NGC Census: 39; 4 finer in this category. PCGS# 7237. NGC ID: 255Y.
