- BB Die State III. A beautiful coin that shows delicate gunmetal-gray with golden accent toning. The surfaces are pleasing with a few minor handling marks from brief circulation, but no distracting edge bruises or scratches. No adjustment marks are present, as well. There is a thin obverse die crack from the border through the top points of star 2, another on the reverse from the letter I in AMERICA into the field above the olive branch. For identification there is a tiny nick on the lower drapery line right of the digit 8 in the date.<p>Per the listing in Stephen J. Herrman's AMBPR for Bust dollars (Winter 2024 revision), there are only two Mint State examples known for this scarce and conditionally challenged die pairing: the Hoffecker-Worrell-Cardinal Collection specimen, and the Warren Miller coin. The present coin in its PCGS AU-53 holder is ranked CC#4, after which the census of known examples drops off quickly to EF and lower grade levels. Here, then, is a significant and fleeting bidding opportunity for advanced early dollar variety enthusiasts. Given the conditionally challenged nature of the Draped Bust dollar series in its entirety, of course, this handsome AU example will also appeal to discerning type collectors. Regardless of your collecting focus, expect strong competition when this lot opens for bidding.
