- Lot Description
- The Carson City mint opened for business in 1870, and all coins struck in the first few years are generally lower mintage and very scarce, due to extensive circulation--few collectors at the time saved any mint mark coinage. The 1871-CC saw a mintage of 153,950 pieces struck. Most went into commerce and the average piece is in the VF/XF range as here. The present piece has bold definition for the assigned grade, we would not balk if it was residing in a 40 holder. The surfaces are pleasing, free from distracting marks and the lilac-gray hued silver is quite lovely. PCGS 10, NGC 9. The last one sold in the 2015 FUN auction, realizing just under $2,000 and the current Collector's Universe value is listed at $2,250. They do not appear in auction regardless of grade with any real frequency, and if you are working on any Seated Half dollar set, or collection of CC-mint issues, odds are you need an example. Cert.
