- Lot Description
- 1822 Capped Bust Dime. JR-1, the only known dies. Rarity-3+. VG-10 (PCGS).
An important and scarce date that is seldom available approaching mid-grades and this one is most pleasing. The surfaces are light silver-gray with russet and blue fields. The mintage of 100,000 pieces is clearly incorrect as these have never been available in any quantity; it would be more likely that half or fewer that number were actually coined of this date. This example would be a prize worth capturing as 1822 dimes are infrequently offered and the majority are found in grades of Good or lower; many are impaired.
Provenance: From the Steven Jay Ball Collection.
PCGS# 4497. NGC ID: 236Z.
