1868 Pattern Five Cents. Judd-627, Pollock-696. Rarity-7-. Copper. Plain Edge. Broad Planchet. Proof-63 BN (NGC). CAC. Obv:Similar to that employed on regular issue nickel three-cent pieces, with a bust of Liberty facing left, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1868 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Rev:A simple laurel wreath encircles the denomination 5 CENTS with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST inscribed along the upper border. Struck on a broad copper planchet. This is a fully original piece with a blend of red-mahogany, with hints of blue, purple, and rose-gold on both sides. Although a few faint carbon spots are seen under close inspection, the obverse is particularly smooth in outward appearance.
