- 1860-S Three-Dollar Gold Piece. VF-20 (PCGS).
An appealing coin for the grade, both sides are warmly patinated in honey-gold with subtle pale rose undertones evident as the surfaces dip into a light. All major design elements are boldly defined to allow full appreciation of this classic gold design. With fewer than 200 coins believed extant in all grades, the 1860-S is the rarest of the pre-Civil War era three-dollar gold issue from the San Francisco Mint. From a net mintage of 4,408 pieces, an additional 2,592 coins struck melted in the Mint.
Provenance: From the RSC Collection.
PCGS# 7981. NGC ID: 25MF.
