Lot Description
1909-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-65 (NGC).
The 1909-D is a low-mintage "Saint" with a mere 52,500 pieces produced. This issue was once a major rarity even in low-end Unc, until several groups of coins were repatriated from European and Latin American bank reserves. This began to occur in the 1960s, the individual coins grading mostly MS-60 to MS-63 by current market standards. Few pieces qualify as near-Gem, and the issue is extremely rare in MS-65 and higher grades.
Bright, satiny surfaces are further adorned with lovely autumn-orange patina. Both sides are exceptionally smooth for the issue, and it is not a stretch for us to write that there are no detracting blemishes. A fully struck and very appealing Gem that belongs in the finest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle set.
