Losbeschreibung
Lot 1049 1809. JR-1, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-64.This is one of the most sought after dates in the entire Capped Bust dime series. It is the first year that the new John Reich design was used on deimes, after being successfully launched on other denominations in copper, gold and silver. The obverse shows a handsome head of Liberty facing left, with stars surrounding and date below. Liberty wears a cap which is inscribed LIBERTY. For the reverse a standing eagle is central with wings outstretched. Mint Engraver Reich anticipated higher coinage of this denomination in 1809, as he engraved two obverse dies and at least one reverse in 1809. However, the mintage of 51,065 for 1809 dimes was entirely struck from a single die pair. The other obverse die was later overdated and used to strike the entire 1811/09 dime production of 65,000 coins. It is interesting to note that the reverse die from 1809 continued in service and struck all the 1811 dimes as well, with a total mintage of over 116,000 pieces. The reverse die literally fell apart at the end of the 1811 dime production. For this stellar 1809 dime, the surfaces are a delight, and the eye appeal strong. Well struck and quite frosty. Only 51,065 struck. Pop 4; 4 finer in 65.Value $8,000 - UP
