Lot Description
Lightly toned in champagne-pink on the obverse, the reverse is more boldly patinated in iridescent rose, olive and cobalt blue. Both sides are lustrous and frosty with a sharply executed strike. Half dollar coinage at Philadelphia remained high in 1858 as the Mint continued to pay aggressive prices for bullion to strike into subsidiary silver coins that were much needed in circulation. With 4,225,700 pieces produced for commerce, this is obviously one of the more readily obtainable No Motto Liberty Seated issues. It is seldom offered above MS-64, nonetheless, and this NGC-certified Gem is a scarce find in today's market.<p>The WB-1 is a DDO variety of this issue with doubling most readily evident along the left outline of the shield, at the ribbon end, around the base of the rock at left, and along the bottom of Liberty's dress.
