Lot Description
1847 Braided Hair Cent. N-18. Rarity-5. Grellman Die State a. Large/Small 7. MS-62 BN (PCGS). Scarce as a variety and also visually dramatic, the 1847 Newcomb-18 cent exhibits remnants of what appears to be a smaller digit 7 above the primary 7 in the date. The 1847 N-2 and N-31 varieties also exhibit this repunching, but for N-18, as here, additional repunching is evident above the bases of the digits 1 and 4, as well as on the entire digit 8. This is the typically encountered early die state without the rim cud breaks that eventually formed in several areas around the obverse border. Handsome medium brown surfaces exhibit subtle gray brown highlights around the central reverse devices. Overall sharply struck, what few grade defining blemishes that are present as so small as to be easily overlooked by the unaided eye. The outward appearance is quite smooth, in fact, and the eye appeal is suggestive of a higher grade.
